Application Letter: First Step Of Job Application

A job application letter is sent with a resume while applying for a job. The point often overlooked is that the letter holds great value as it kicks starts the process of a job application. Unlike bygone days, today almost every job applicant is asked to send a job application letter along with their resume. For obvious reasons, it becomes very important for a job seeker to achieve dexterity in writing an impressive job application letter.

People often get confused over which details to fill in the letter as the resume already covers the significant skills and qualifications. As stated, the letter is the initial stage of the job application so try to acquaint the recruiter with your best skills and top achievements. One should include standard biographical details and information highlighting their skills in the letter. Remember that through the job application letter, you convince the recipient why you are a good fit for the position and why should they choose you for the interview.

No need to say that the letter of a job application is as important as the resume itself. Note that the hiring manager reads your application first before moving to your resume. So, pay as much heed to your job application letter as you pay to your resume. Having said that, there are a lot of points you should keep in mind while writing it. Here, I have enlisted those points for you and shared some samples of the job application letter as well, for your reference.

Points To Remember:

  1. Should be different from Resume: To begin with, the letter of a job application is different from a resume. Whereas the resume documents your education, experiences, and achievements, an application letter is more like a sales pitch where you try to sell yourself to the recruiter. Acquaint the recruiter with your abilities and relevant accomplishments that qualify you for the position. Tell them about your background.
  2. Application in accordance with the profile: It is important to realize that you can’t send the same letter for different job profiles. Hence, personalize your job application letter in accordance with the profile you are applying for. The main motive to write the letter is to let the recruiter know that you are a perfect match for the job. Include the skills that are there in the job description. Believe me, this won’t let your job application go unnoticed.
  3. Stay Professional: No need to say that the process of a job application is a formal one so the tone of the letter should be professional. Don’t use informal terms and avoid usage of redundant sentences. Give extra attention to the salutation. Additionally, don’t mention the first name of the recipient if not requested.

In addition to this, you must know how to write a cover letter. In fact, it plays a significant role in catching the eye of HR to shortlist you for the interview.

The Content:

  1. Proofread: Grammatical errors are not appreciated anywhere, particularly in a job application letter. The letters with grammatical mistakes are more likely to go ignored, hence, tossing all your efforts in vain. After writing the letter, read it out loud to check if there were any sort of mistakes not necessarily grammatical.
  2. Format: Use a business letter format for the job application letter. Note that the format is different for an email and a hard copy. In an email, you write a subject line and the contact information is placed below your signature. Below are samples of both email and hardcopy. People usually go for job applications via emails.
